Every January 27, the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust is celebrated , because on this same day, but in the Nazi camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated. The greatest technological invention” of the 20th century? Theodor Adorno , German philosopher and sociologist of the Frankfurt School , wrote extensively on culture, critical thinking, and society. Because he had to flee Fax Lists Nazi Germany and go into exile in the United States of America, Adorno addressed the subject of the Holocaust and Auschwitz in his reflections on barbarism and culture after World War II. In his essay Culture and Barbarism , written in Adorno argued that European culture , the same one that had produced great intellectual, technical, and artistic achievements, was the germ of the barbarism that culminated in the gas chambers.
This meant that the Enlightenment and the “progress of reason” , even though it managed to perfect human mastery over nature and the development of technological and scientific tools that allowed us greater well-being, did not lead us to the moral and ethical progress that could be expected. . Due to this, the “instrumental reason” , that focused on improving material conditions through technical improvements, had devastating consequences as it did not contain an ethical basis that limited the use of its inventions.
