Damascus is a city of great beauty hence it is known as the City of Jasmine and also Paradise of the East. It is one of the oldest cities in the world. Damascus is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
It is one of the few cities that have been continuously inhabited since Antiquity. Damascus has an immense legacy of almost all the cultures that passed through the site where the city currently stands or that settled there. The Umayyad Mosque
It is the most important mosque in the city and one of the oldest and largest in the world. It was built by the Umayyad caliph al-Walid I in the year on the ancient Byzantine cathedral dedicated to Saint John the Baptist since the time of the Roman emperor Constantine I which was worthy of the powerful empire over which he reigns. There are also important references within the mosque for Shiites such as the place where the head of Hussein bin Ali grandson of the Prophet Muhammad is preserved exhibited by Caliph Yazid I. It is famous for housing the mausoleum of Sultan Saladin which is located in a small garden adjacent to the north wall of the mosque.
The external walls come from the ancient temple of the Aramaic and Roman times. Greek ornaments and insignia can be seen on the external walls. Likewise some columns of the temple are preserved in good condition mainly in the western part in the square in front of the mosque.
